A variable is defined as a characteristic or attribute that can assume different values.
Sebuah variabel didefinisikan sebagai karakteristik atau atribut yang dapat mengambil nilai yang berbeda.
A variable whose values are determined by chance is called a random variable.
Variabel yang nilainya ditentukan oleh kebetulan disebut random variable.
If a variable can assume only a specific number of values, such as the outcomes for the roll of a die or the outcomes for the toss of a coin, then the variable is called a discrete variable.
Jika variabel hanya dapat mengambil sejumlah nilai tertentu, seperti hasil dari lemparan dadu atau hasil dari lemparan koin, maka variabel tersebut disebut discrete variable.
Discrete variables have values that can be counted.
Variabel diskrit memiliki nilai yang dapat dihitung.
If a variable can assume all values in the interval between two given values then the variable is called a continuous variable. Example - temperature between 68∘68^{\circ} to 78∘78^{\circ}.
Jika variabel dapat mengambil semua nilai dalam interval antara dua nilai tertentu maka variabel tersebut disebut continuous variable. Contoh - suhu antara 68∘68^{\circ} hingga 78∘78^{\circ}.
Continuous random variables are obtained from data that can be measured rather than counted.
Variabel acak kontinu diperoleh dari data yang dapat diukur daripada dihitung.

A probability distribution consists of the values a random variable can assume and the corresponding probabilities of the values. The probabilities are determined theoretically or by observation.
